She's Going to Hate Me For This One Day

Listen carefully after Hailey's cry.

I know it's disgusting, but it cracked me up. Such horrible sounds coming from such a cute little girl!

Her Daddy will be SO proud!

This One's For You, GGG!

Hailey's Great Grandma Gard (GGG=Triple G) bought her this vibrating seat. She loves it, and so do I because it keeps her happy while I get dressed/brush my teeth/etc.

This one's for you GGG.

Decorating for Christmas

Last night we went to Steve's grandparents to set up and decorate their Christmas tree. It was a lot of fun. The best part was Hailey was so sleepy from the fun night of pizza, family, and decorating that she slept the best she's ever slept. She only woke up once between 10 and 5:30!

Here is a video from the night: Sydney, Steve's cousin, singing Jingle Bells in front of the Christmas tree we decorated.
*This one's for you, Marianne. :)

Tummy Time

Turn off your sound for this one. Hailey isn't a fan of tummy time, but she's getting stronger every day!

1 Month Old

Hailey turned one month last weekend! First, let me apologize for any typos. Hailey is napping on my shoulder and I have the laptop propped up on the boppee on my lap. Her booty is on the laptop so she can get a pat when needed. Ahhh, the life of a mom on maternity leave. Glamourous, huh?

I finally got to take Hailey's 1 month picture. In true Hailey style, she was the boss of this photo shoot!

"Ohhh, Mom, I don't know about this. Another picture?"

"Hey! Look over there! That's more fun than that dumb camera!"

"Fiiinnneee. Take the stupid picture.

"Consider this photo shoot OVER!"

Maybe the 2 month photo shoot will be easier...maybe.

My Womb is Like a Vibrating Steam Shower

Hailey is a wonderful baby, but I wouldn't say she's a "good baby." She knows what she wants and what she likes, and if you don't give it to her, she lets you know. That's ok...for now(I just hope the babysitter is ok with it).

Well, there have been a couple of times where I just can't figure out what she needs/wants. She's fed, has a clean diaper, burped, given gas drops, warm, entertained, etc, but she still is screaming.

What works
A vibrating sauna...that's what. Hailey and I go into our guest bathroom, shut the door, turn off the lights (the nightlight is on), turn on the shower (hot as it gets), and I sit her in her vibrating seat (Thanks, GGG). It works every time!

If only she'd sleep like this all the time.
*Thanks, Karla, for the picture. :)

Prettiest Little Hillbilly

Hailey has the best of both worlds: A mom who loves to shop, make bows, and dress up her little girl AND a dad who likes to be outside, get dirty, and cares less about what others think about his "style."

Opening day of deer season was less than a week after Hailey's due date so I made her a cute PINK camoflauge outfit to wear. Since then, she has received several other camo outfits which makes her the prettiest little hillbilly ever!

Well, when Steve called to tell me he shot a buck, I quickly put Hailey in her outfit to celebrate and went over to see him.

Steve wanted to take pictures...gross.

I can't believe I agreed to this picture, but look at how proud her daddy is!

12.03.2010

Sooo big!

The videos below aren't too exciting, but I know her grandparents and great-grandparents will think they are VERY exciting. She's getting so big! I love that she has more head control and is beginning to interact with things!

*If you know how to put more than one video in a post, please leave me a comment and let me know. I am new at this.

Hailey and her Play Mat

Hailey is beginning to look at things. She LOVES the green octopus.

Hailey loves her Sophie that her friend Sammy gave her!

Chunky Monkey

Last week I took Hailey to the doctor to check to see if she was back to her birthweight. She JUST made it, but had only gained 3.5 ounces in 1 week. The nurse wasn't satisfied with that so she asked me to come back in a week to make sure she's gaining.

Well, I couldn't wait a week and took her a day early. Our little girl gained 12 ounces in 6 days!

Now I am off to check her closet for any newborn clothes she hasn't worn yet. I have a feeling she won't be wearing them for much longer.

*This is an old picture from the hospital, but I just had to show off her lips! We LOVE those lips! We will take/post more pictures this week...hopefully.

11.18.2010

2 Weeks Old

Hailey is two weeks old today! Currently she's celebrating by hanging out in her swing and NOT sleeping!
We've learned a lot about our little girl (and babies in general) in the last two weeks. She's such a sweet girl, but she definitely knows what she likes...and doesn't like.
Hailey is slowly getting into a schedule (then quickly breaking it...like now). She's eating every three hours during the day and every 3-5 hours at night. She cries when she's hungry or getting her diaper changed, but that's about it until evening.

Every night after dinner Steve gives me time to take a bath/shower while he has "Sprouty time." This is usually when she gets fussy, but Steve is SO patient with her.
We went to the doctor on Tuesday to check her weight. She's back to her birth weight but only gained 3.5 oz instead of the desired 5 oz in a week so she's going back next week for another check. The nurse thinks she's fine, but just wants to be sure. I contribute the low weight gain to the spit up and giant nasty diaper before we weighed her.
We haven't ventured out too much, but we've been to her great-grandparents 3 times! Matt and Arlene love their time with their first great-grandchild and Hailey LOVES to sleep in her great-grandma's arms. Arlene has had a lot of practice with 12 children and several grandchildren. She's a pro!
Hailey will be getting her first real bath tonight. Thanks to the warming lights in the hospital, her umbilical cord is already off. I'm hoping she likes it more than the sponge bath.
It looks like the swing did it's magic and she's snoozing. Time for this momma to do the same thing!

My First Official Day on the Job

Today is my first day as a mom on maternity leave. Well, it sort of started last night. I was determined to let Steve have a good night's sleep since he had to work today so I took care of all of the feedings, changings, soothings while he slept. He left this morning at 6:30 am for work, and we are on our own! :) Thank goodness my friend Karla will be here in a few hours! :) haha

We were finally discharged Saturday around 11am after her jaundice levels came back low and the doctors had seen us. I was SO happy to leave that hospital after spending 4 nights there and hardly leaving my room. Our hospital has bells (like church bells) that ring through town as new babies leave. It was so pretty. I almost cried.

As soon as we got home, we took pictures (lots of them) and settled into our house. Then, Betsy came to help out. She was WONDERFUL! She did laundry, washed dishes, made meals, and gave great advice. We had some visitors Saturday night and then we settled in for our first night home.

The first night wasn't the best, but I guess it's what we should have expected. Hailey wanted to stay awake, and we wanted to sleep. Betsy saved our lives (well, our sanity) and stayed up with her for a few hours so we could sleep. It was LOVELY!

Sunday was a great day. Betsy helped me give Hailey her first sponge bath at home. It started with her peeing on my hand, and ended with her relaxing while I washed her hair under the faucet. She LOVED that part. Later, Hailey took her first trip out to meet her great-grandma who was in IL when she was born. She loved being in her arms. Then, we hung out at our house as a family and relaxed.

Last night was a much better night. Even though her days/nights are still messed up, Hailey was much more content. We were up for several hours because she didn't want to close her eyes, but I learned a trick! :) Turn the lights on! I had the lights dimmed everywhere to "soothe" her, but that was only keeping her awake because she could look around. As soon as I turned them on, she closed her eyes and went right to sleep! Seriously, I wish I were a faster learner.

Today, my friend Karla is coming in town to help out. (I honestly couldn't have better friends.) She's going to help me out with a ton of stuff including taking Hailey to her first doctor's appointment tomorrow.

Life is good...no, great...I couldn't ask for anything more.

Happy 1 Day Birthday, Hailey

Our first day was great. It started with a much needed nap, and ended with a trip down to the nursery so Steve and I could get some more sleep. During the day, we had TONS of visitors. Good thing we have a big room because this girl is SO loved.

We're not sure when we're going home. We had planned to go home sometime today, but Haily just had her bilirubin levels checked and they are a little high. She's spending time under the lights this morning and will be checked at noon today to see if her levels go down. I sure am going to miss that little girl while she's under those lights!
Steve's dad, Andy, came to visit her, but wasn't sure about holding such a tiny baby. I LOVE this picture. :) Don't worry, Steve doesn't hold her like this.
Steve's grandpa Woods also came to visit. He has SEVERAL children and grandchildren, but Hailey is his first great-grandchild. You can tell he's been around a lot of babies. He's a natural. Check out those giant hands. They are as big as our little girl!

Update!

The last post was from Steve. I apologize for the lack of info, but there really wasn't much.

By 11:15 I was begging the nurse to check me again to see if I was at a 4 in order to get an epidural. BEGGING! Of course, I wasn't so she checked me again at 12 and I was at 4!

The nurse went to get all of the epidural stuff as well as my new best friend (aka anesthesiologist), but by 12:45 she wasn't back yet and I was near death (ok, it just seemed that way). As I sent Steve out to look for her, she was walking in with the stuff.

The nurse went ahead and put a thing on Sprout's head to keep track of her heart rate and then my bff gave me the epidural.

After that, it's a bit of a blur. What I DO know is that I had THE BEST NAP EVER!

Later the nurse woke me up to put another probe in me to check contractions internally as well as the cathedar. So now I am hooked up to the epidural (with a patient release button, thank-you-very-much), internal heart rate probe, internal contraction probe, iv, pitocin, and cathedar. Basically, I have no worries. :)

At this point, my nurse is working on increasing the pitocin so I continue to dialate while I am sleeping and relaxing. My contractions need to be closer together, but they're getting there.

My doctor just stopped in and she's going to FL for a conference so she won't be delivering the baby, but I have met the doctor and he's a great guy. She's thinking that she'll come this evening, but we'll see! :)

stuff is happening........kind of

3cm dialated, the doc broke her water a little before 8 this morning

Who Needs Sleep?!

Apparently not this girl!
My nurse gave me a sleeping pill at 9 that worked wonders until about 12. Then, I was waking up with every contraction. So they agreed to give me tylenol 3 at about 3 am which might have worked for an hour but I was still waking with every contraction.

When I was in elementary school I used to cry every night before the first day of school because I was too excited to sleep and just KNEW my day would be horrible. It never was. So I hope this one is the same. I hope somehow I get a rush of adrenaline that pulls me through the long day coming up.

Luckily, Steve is sleeping right now. I had him up rubbing my back from 12-3 but since then he's been sleeping.
Sprout, on the other hand, is having a party. She sure does like it in there. :)

11.02.2010

Tonight's News

My doctor just checked me. I am still one cm...bummer!
BUT she is happy that I am now contracting, baby is coming down, etc. So there is progress, but not a ton.
The plan is to get more cervadil tonight and get some rest before a busy day tomorrow. Sprout is loving life...and her current home.
Seriously, Sprout....get out!

No News is....No News.

Steve and I got into our room at 8 and saw the doctor around 8:30. My doctor gave me cervadil in hopes that it would start contractions. Now, we are just hanging out in the room...waiting. So far, I have had contractions, but nothing that I can really feel.

They take the cervadil out around 9 tonight and decide if/when to give me pitocin at that point. Hopefully, I will start contracting on my own, but you never know. I think she really likes it in there.

This is bigger than Christmas!

It's 6am. I've been up since 5. I guess that's ok since we went to bed at 9. I slept ok, but was up every few hours and then every hour.
I promised Steve I would not wake him up, but I lied because I am heading that way. :)
This is BIG! :) Bigger than Christmas!

11.01.2010

Things are about to get exciting.

I went to the doctor today during lunch and my blood pressure was just a tiny bit higher. After checking my urine (gross, I know, but it's going to get worse) Dr. Young decided that it's time for this baby girl to come out.

SO, we are reporting to the hospital at 7:30 tomorrow morning. My induction is scheduled for 8:00 if they have room for me.

We've been told that this won't be a quick process so we probably won't meet Sprout until Wednesday, but we are SO ready. :) Tonight, we're packing up last minute stuff, tidying the house (Sprout doesn't like coming home to a dirty house), and getting as much rest as possible.

We'll do our best to update the blog as much as possible, but I can't promise anything. I'm a busy mom, you know. ;)

10.31.2010

Update on Sprout

I went to the doctor for my regular visit last Friday, and found out that my blood pressure had increased for the second week in a row. I tried to blame it on the Halloween party that I had just had in my classroom, but Dr. Young disagreed. Apparently, since my mom had the same problems, it is more likely for me to have high blood pressure as well, and no amount of rest and relaxation is going to change it. After looking at my blood pressure history and feet/ankles that resembled sausages, she requested that I return tomorrow (Monday) to have my blood pressure checked again.

So, the plan is if it is still high, she will think about inducing me, if it has gone down, we'll wait a bit longer. At this point, she's thinking Sprout is about 7 1/2 pounds so she's not going to be a small baby. :)

I'm not so sure how I feel about all of it. As long as she is healthy, I'm fine with whatever. I wish I had more control over the situation, but I don't...and I am learning that...slowly.

10.23.2010

Progress!

I had my 37 week doctor's visit last Friday and WE HAVE PROGRESS! It isn't much, but it's better than what I thought it would be.

Dialated: 1cm
Effaced: 50%
Station: -1

So our baby girl is head down and has dropped.

I'm still feeling pretty good except for this stupid cold my students gave me. So now I am off to read in front of the fire and rest up for this baby girl (and a week's worth of conferences+Halloween party)! Hopefully, she'll hold out for a week or two more, but you never know!

35 Weeks Down...35 Days to Go....

...or something like that.

How far along?: 35 Weeks
How big is baby?: She should be about 5ish pounds, but we don't know. I feel MUCH bigger every day.
Weight gain?: 30 pounds...gasp! It's hard for me to admit that, but I guess there's nothing to be ashamed of. My dr. said I am doing great. :) Gotta love those doctors!
Stretch marks?: some tiny ones on my hips...I am sure more are coming...gee thanks, Sprout
Maternity clothes: of course, but Steve's fleece pants and t-shirts are my favorite
Sleep?: Most of the time, I sleep really well, but acid reflux kept me up all night Sunday night. It was probably the worst night of my whole pregnancy. Steve had to go downstairs and steal Tums out of Moose's medicine basket.
Best moment this week?: Seeing everyone at my New Castle baby shower
Food Cravings?: It changes moment to moment. I do love food.
Gender?: She BETTER be a girl (or we are in serious trouble)!
Movement?: Oh yeah. Steve and I were cuddling on the couch the other night and she started to kick him. :)
What I miss?: I love being pregnant, but sometimes I do wonder what it was like to not be so big. It's getting hard to fit in places. Today, I couldn't sit at a table because I couldn't fit. How embarassing!
Belly button: Still in and no signs of coming out...woohoo! I can't believe it!
What I'm looking forward to?: I have one more baby shower at work next week, and then the real nesting begins!

Ta-da!

One of my goals this summer was to have the baby room "done" by the time school started. This week, I start classes and soon I will be getting my room ready, so I am happy to say (thanks to Steve) I met my goal. There are still some things to be done, but Sprout now has a lovely room to come home to!

Crafting For Sprout (Week 5)

I've made a bunch of hats this week. This one is for Sprout, but I made some more for her friends.

These are for her and her best friend, Steve (aka Dad). Steve requested these for Michigan State game days.

Sprout's crib blanket is finished. :)

More babylegs!

Another taggie!

Pacifier clips.

More bows!

Next Week: a crib skirt!

7.20.2010

Nursery Update

We have (some) furniture! The crib and dresser/changing table are here!

Sprout's closet is beginning to fill up! I admit I have bought a few things, but I have learned that people LOVE to buy for little girls.

This is exciting!

Living Like the Amish

Thursday was supposed to be my day to get some crafting done. According to the weather man, we were supposed to have scattered showers. Boy was he wrong!

The day started out pretty normal. I finished up the curtains and was relaxing and waiting for the rain. Then, around 4:30, the thunderstorm watch turned into a severe thunderstorm warning and mother nature showed us what's up.

Being the responsible mother I am, Sprout, Moose, and I headed to the basement about the same time the power went out. I crafted by candlelight (hand sewing....someone needs to make a battery operated hot glue gun) until the storm seemed to pass.

I walked upstairs and called Steve to let him know we were without power. While talking to him, I looked out the window at our front yard and saw the biggest mess ever! The trees surrounding our house just weren't strong enough to deal with mother nature's blow. One giant tree fell to cover half our driveway and another broke in half to hang over the power line....nice!

To make a long story short, Steve cut our way out of the driveway and we sought refuge at one of the few houses with power, Steve's grandparents'. Then, we returned home to sleep in our powerless (air conditionless) house only to find the fire department blocking our driveway and smoke everywhere. My heart sank. Luckily, it was just a broken power line and we were able to go around it to get home.

It was so hot, we slept here

in the basement...with Moose...on an air mattress....(un)heavenly.

Friday, I cut and pinned fabric for when the power came back on and started knitting like the amish.

Then, I spent the afternoon at the pool where power isn't necessary.

Finally, Friday evening, our power came back on, and all that was left was some serious clean up.

I didn't take before pictures, but you can see the giant brush pile on the right along with a tree stump and a bunch of logs.

Our backyard was COVERED in sticks. Now, we're ready for a big bonfire!

7.18.2010

Crafting for Sprout (Week 4)

This week was a crazy one (we'll get to "why" at a later post), but I did manage to get a lot done in the craft room.

First, after trying the babylegs on some seriously chunky baby legs (love you, Sam), I decided that the fit would work for our little girl, so I made some more!

Seriously, I may be addicted to making these so let's hope they fit and baby girl likes them. In stores, they cost about $12 and I can make them for $2 and 15 minutes of my time!

Then, I got serious and tackled the first project for the nursery, curtains.

I made them double sided just in case I changed my mind about prints. Our plan is to put cordless light blocking shades underneath.

Finally, because mother nature thought I should try living like the amish for over 24 hours, I decided to teach myself to knit hats using a "knifty knitter."

I sure hope Sprout likes hats! :)

*I forgot to take a picture of the pacifier clips I made. Oops. They'll have to be in next week's post.

7.10.2010

Crafting for Sprout (Week 3)

This week was another short week, but it was still productive.

First, I tackled a project Steve requested. Apparently, Sprout needed a little pink camo in her life to celebrate opening day of deer season (Nov. 15th). Hopefully, she is here by then. If she is, she'll be sporting this:

A month or so ago, Steve and I saw a 10 pack of white bibs for super cheap. He said, "Go ahead and get them. They'll entertain you this summer." He had NO idea! I am obsessed with making these. I only have 3 left!

In other baby news...
Sprout is kicking more often and I LOVE it. Steve finally felt her about a week ago, but hasn't since. Her kicks still aren't that strong or predictable.
We ordered the nursery furniture and most of it will be here in a week or two. I can't wait! That means I can start on the bed skirt soon.
I'm heading to Indy this weekend to register at Target and Babies R Us with Betsy and Karla. I can't wait.

Crafting for Sprout (Week 2)

This week was really only 3 days of crafting instead of 5 since we're spending a long weekend in KY for the 4th, but I did get some things done.

First, I made my breastfeeding cover.

Then, I made my changing pad/diaper and wipes holder.

Finally, I made a taggie just for fun out of some scraps.
